'Understood in the light of the Scriptures, the term "Sacred Heart of Jesus" denotes the entire mystery of Christ, the totality of his being, and his person considered in its most intimate essential: Son of God, uncreated wisdom; infinite charity, principal of the salvation and sanctification of mankind. The "Sacred Heart" is Christ, the Word Incarnate, Saviour, intrinsically containing, in the Spirit, an infinite divine-human love for the Father and for his brothers.'

This is a blog dedicated to a new icon of the Sacred Heart as the 'summary of our religion' . Commissioned by Prof. David.W.Parsons (DWP) from Ian Knowles at Elias Icons. The inspiration for this new icon comes from the work of the French Jesuit priest and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin as well as from the tradition and teachings of the Church. The aim of the blog is to chart and explore the spiritual, artistic and intellectual dimensions involved in the 'writing' and 'reading' of a sacred icon of one of the most well-known symbols in the Catholic tradition: the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To follow our journey please go to the early 2010 entries and read forward. Ian began preliminary work on the commission in January 2011 and then had to travel to Amman to work on another Sacred Heart in Naur, Jordan. Ian came back to the UK in early April for Easter and then returned to the Holy Land. On his return to the UK he began work on the icon in June - the month of the Sacred Heart - and the work was delivered on the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola, 31st July, 2011.
